Mick’s Marathon

Nicol Thomas are supporting CEO Mick Laverty to raise money for The ExtraCare Charitable Trust by running the 2019 London Marathon.

Pictured from left to right are, David Moorcroft OBE, Wendy Griffin, Peter Griffin and Mick Laverty. David Moorcroft is a former Olympic runner and World Record holder for 5000m, and has offered Mick Laverty help and advise on running the marathon.

Nicol Thomas have donated £5000 to The ExtraCare Charitable Trust, this will be used to improve the lives of residents living with Dementia. ExtraCare offer an Enriched Opportunities Programme which offers tailored support for residents living with dementia and common mental health issues, aiming to reduce the disabling impact of dementia and improve well-being. The £5000 can fund the whole of ExtraCare’s programme for 4 days and make a huge difference for residents. Some of the donation will go towards dementia nurses, which are called Locksmiths as they unpick the memory of a person with dementia.

Recently a Locksmith made a huge impact with a resident that had just lost his wife at Christmas. He appeared to be going through the grieving process and was expressing this through anger and frustration. He was also isolated and had never attended his location’s events. During the assessment process, the Locksmith found out that he was a keen pool and darts player, and she asked him to come down to the social club for a game of snooker with her. After some encouragement he has now joined the darts and snooker teams, whilst also attending tai chi, bingo and other activities. He now appears much happier and is sociable, with the Locksmith feeling that it is because she had the time to find out about his interests and encourage him to participate. It’s good to know that a simple donation can have such a positive impact on someone’s life.

We are proud to have made an impact to ExtraCare residents, and would like to wish Mick Laverty good luck in the 2019 London Marathon.
