Police Event Control Suite

The 690 sq.m facility was commissioned by the West Midlands Police to be its main Silver/Gold Command Centre for the coordination and control of major national incidents or events, and key to this was a critical path completion ahead of the Pope’s visit to Birmingham, and a month later, the Conservative Party Conference.

Sensitive in nature, the building was designed and orientated such that the most vulnerable areas were furthest away from the nearby road.  This provided an additional layer of security both in terms of the buildings physicality and sensitive overlooking.

The resulting built form is dug into the site with a tree lined landscaped bund around the building.  There were further design constraints imposed on the building design including its location within the Calthorpe Estate and surrounding conservation areas.

Externally exposed elevations are a combination of tile cladding and glazing with a green roof seeded with a mixture of wild grasses to help anchor the building to its setting.
