Spring Street

The development site lies just outside the defined local conservation area which surrounds it on three sides.  The layout of the building is set back from Spring Street behind the customer car park and located away from residential properties.  Design challenges included aligning a typical unit layout with the massing and elevational treatment, that is appropriate in scale and massing within this vernacular context, predominantly characterised by smaller, domestic buildings.

To support the notion of reducing the overall perceived scale and mass of the building, the frontage to the sales area and the back-up section are treated differently, which also helps to distinguish the building use.  The materiality of the scheme (stone, render and slate roof) is defined by architectural cues from surrounding buildings and is a considered response to the sites close proximity to the conservation area.
